(Image: The Independent)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Although Ronaldo went on Instagram last week shortly after news of the lawsuit broke to denounce the \u201cfake news,\u201d he didn&#8217;t clearly address the lawsuit per se at that time.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, he was more forthright.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me. Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in. Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Cristiano Ronaldo (@Cristiano) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Cristiano\/status\/1047490574687907841?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 3, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In response, Leslie Stoval &#8212; who is representing the self-named alleged victim\u00a0Kathryn Mayorga &#8212; said his client was\u00a0\u201cnot interested in responding to Twitter,\u201d noting that Ronaldo will have 20 days to respond to a summons once it goes out.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ronaldo Lawyer Leaks<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>But German sports magazine <em>Der Spiegel<\/em>\u00a0leaked documents that claim to include a copy of a non-disclosure agreement between Ronaldo\u2019s camp and Mayorga, in which she agrees to drop her claims against the soccer player in return for a $375,000 payout.<\/p>\n<p><em>Der Spiegel&#8217;s <\/em>documents\u00a0also include an alleged confidential information-gathering questionnaire sent to Ronaldo by his lawyer in 2009. The magazine claims that Ronaldo is referred to as &#8220;X&#8221; in the document, while Mayorga is referred to as &#8220;Ms. C.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"main-blockquote\"><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>I entered her from behind,\u201d <\/strong>said X in the document.<strong>\u00a0\u201cIt was rude. We didn&#8217;t change position. 5\/7 minutes. She said that she didn&#8217;t want to, but she made herself available \u2026 But she kept saying &#8216;No.&#8217; &#8216;Don&#8217;t do it.&#8217; &#8216;I&#8217;m not like the others.&#8217; I apologized afterwards.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At a press conference in Las Vegas, Stoval, said his client was \u201cdetermined to follow through on this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit also claims Ronaldo\u2019s team of fixers \u201ccoerced\u201d Mayorga into accepting the settlement and that their actions derailed the police investigation into the allegedly criminal act.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Police Reopen Case <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>After initially filing a police report, Mayorga failed to follow up with investigators, fearing negative publicity and because Ronaldo&#8217;s team of handlers threatened to implicate Mayorga in a scheme \u201cto obtain money\u201d from the sports star, according to the filing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mayorga has been diagnosed as suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, according to her attorney. The lawsuit also accuses Ronaldo of battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, coercion, fraud, and abuse of a vulnerable person, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>Las Vegas Metro Police confirmed to the <em>Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/em> this week that they had reopened the investigation in September, although would not comment any further on the matter.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">In May 2016, Nevada enacted a bill that extended the statute of limitations for rape cases &#8212;\u00a0 in part in response to intense lobbying by former victims of alleged rapes by Bill Cosby. The former TV star was convicted of three counts of sexual assault in April from a more recent case involving former Temple University sports coach Andrea Constand, and is now serving a three-to-10 year sentence in a Pennsylvania state maximum-security prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Prosecutors were previously required to bring charges within a four-year period from the time an alleged offense occurred.
