The proposal for 2017, D\u2019Allesandro\u2019s 19th, would license two casinos in New Hampshire, which the senator estimates would create revenues of $195 million per year in taxes for the state and $25.2 million a year in revenue sharing for communities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">D\u2019Allesandro sees himself as a modern Larry Pickett, the New Hampshire politician who established the state\u2019s lottery in 1964, America\u2019s first, following a legislative push that lasted 10 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">It seems almost cruel to point out, however, that the good senator is now lagging a full eight years behind his role model.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><b>Rockingham Park Closed <\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\">It\u2019s not as though D\u2019Allesandro\u2019s failures have been abject. He has often enjoyed healthy support in his own chamber, but corresponding legislation has typically died in the House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><em><strong>But in 2014, it came agonizingly close to passing. On a 172-172 tie in the House, the casino bill was killed off when Deputy Speaker Naida Kaen cast the deciding vote against it.<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">With the then-governor on board, it would have been impossible to come closer to legalizing casinos in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/new-hampshire-gambling-bill-dead-for-2016-state-opts-instead-to-fund-war-on-drugs\">New Hampshire<\/a> without actually legalizing them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Much of D\u2019Allesandro\u2019s crusading effort has been driven by a desire to save the Rockingham Park thoroughbred racetrack in Salem by allowing it to build a casino.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">On a sad note, Rockingham closed this year after 100 years in business and will be redeveloped into a mixed-use retail property. There will be no casino a Rockingham Park, but D\u2019Allesandro is undeterred.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><b>Granite Will <\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\">In fact, these days he\u2019s energized by a different threat to the state: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/new-england-patriots-favored-las-vegas-super-bowl-li\">New England<\/a> casino explosion. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"main-blockquote\">\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>\u201cI think the situation is different in this context,\u201d he told NHPR\u2019s Morning Edition. \u201cWe now have a situation where Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut all have gaming enterprises, and they\u2019re full blown. They\u2019re taking New Hampshire money, and New Hampshire people are moving in that direction to do what they like to do. It\u2019s an option. If they like to gamble, they have a place to go. So my question is why aren\u2019t they doing it in New Hampshire?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cThere are always areas of compromise,\u201d he adds, when asked if there is scope for amendment to the bill in its current form. \u201cThis bill has been adjusted 19 times in the last 19 years, so we\u2019ve tried to compromise.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Hampshire State Senator Lou D\u2019Allesandro\u2019s casino bill has become something of an annual tradition.
