Pallone\u2019s moment of glory arrived when, with Rotowire head Schoenke on the stand, the assemblyman demanded to know why DraftKings had applied for and received a gambling license in the UK if the contests were not gambling.<\/p>\n
Schoenke replied that gambling laws in the UK were different and \u201cmore restrictive.\u201d<\/p>\n
To be clear, he\u2019s talking about the same United Kingdom that has a betting shop on every street corner in which it\u2019s possible to wager up to \u00a3100 ever 20 seconds on fixed-odds video games like roulette. Yep, that UK, where \u201crestrictive\u201d doesn\u2019t seem to be a very apt adjective for its public gambling consumption.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt sounds like the difference is that in one country they have a lot of smart lawyers or lobbyists that are defining things in one way and in the other they\u2019re not,\u201d Pallone shot back.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
While there was some discussion of the need for consumer protections and prevention of underage gambling, the hearing didn\u2019t break much new ground and there was no suggestion that any kind of legislation or regulation was likely to come out of it.<\/p>\n
Some committee members also appeared to be ill-informed about the nature of the contests and the finer points of the issues being debated.<\/p>\n
