Joe Lombardo Holding Talks On A&#8217;s Las Vegas Move"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Newly elected Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo reportedly met with officials from the Oakland Athletics regarding the club\u2019s potential move to Las Vegas, which could affect Strip sites currently occupied by casino-hotels.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_256234\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-256234\" data-style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-256234\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/JL-142x95.jpg\" alt=\"Lombardo\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption  id=\"caption-attachment-256234\"class=\"text-description\">Nevada. (Image: <em>CNN<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Republican governor is apparently opposed to creating new taxes to lure the Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise to Las Vegas, but he could be open to exploring other avenues for bringing the team to Nevada\u2019s largest city, reports the <em>Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/em>, citing a Lombado spokesperson. It\u2019s believed the team wants some form of public financial assistance in its quest to build a $1 billion stadium in Las Vegas &#8212; a notion balked at by Lombardo\u2019s predecessor, Democrat Steve Sisolak.<\/p>\n<p>Las Vegas contributed $750 million toward the construction of Allegiant Stadium \u2014 home of the NFL\u2019s Raiders. On multiple occasions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/clark-county-again-uses-reserve-fund-make-stadium-bond-payment\/\">Las Vegas has dipped into its reserve fund<\/a> to service that debt. To date, Clark County\u2019s credit rating hasn\u2019t been adversely affected by those moves. But appetite for taxpayers assisting in stadium builds is waning across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Further pressuring the efforts of the A\u2019s and MLB to procure county and state funds for a Las Vegas stadium are the facts the $375 million tab <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/sisolak-not-in-favor-of-public-funds-for-las-vegas-mlb-ballpark\/\">for T-Mobile Arena<\/a> \u2014 home of the NHL\u2019s Golden Knights &#8212; was privately funded, as are efforts for another Strip-area arena that could be used to lure an NBA franchise to Sin City.<\/p>\n<h2>Tropicana Still Alive as Possible Stadium Site<\/h2>\n<p>The A\u2019s-to-Las Vegas rumor is long-running and over the past several years, it\u2019s been speculated that MLB considered multiple sites along the Strip for a stadium.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p>More recently, that speculation centered around two sites &#8212; Tropicana&#8217;,s location and a 37-acre fairgrounds and recreational vehicle (RV) park near Circus Circus. However, Circus Circus owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/phil-ruffin-reportedly-making-bid-to-get-oakland-as-to-las-vegas\/\">Phil Ruffin<\/a> recently indicated he hasn\u2019t been in contact with the A\u2019s. Conversely, a Bally\u2019s executive confirmed the gaming company, which operates Tropicana, has been in talks with the A\u2019s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Gaming and Leisure Properties owns Tropicana\u2019s real estate and has previously mentioned it would work with Bally\u2019s in the event the casino-hotel is eliminated in favor of a ballpark.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A\u2019s leadership previously expressed interest in the fairgrounds site. But for now, Tropicana could be in the pole position, assuming the team executes the move to Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<h2>A\u2019s-to-Vegas Far From Done Deal<\/h2>\n<p>While MLB signed off on the A\u2019s leaving Oakland, there\u2019s belief that the team wants to stay in its current city and is hoping for a major redevelopment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/as-las-vegas-move-looks-unlikely-after-san-francisco-vote\/\">of a 56-acre terminal<\/a> at the Port of Oakland, including a new stadium.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In other words, the team may be using Las Vegas as leverage to get what it wants out of Oakland. In a recent media interview, Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft notes the A\u2019s approach to Las Vegas is far different from that of the Las Vegas Raiders.
