The 2021 incident led to the guard\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_251412\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-251412\" data-style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-251412\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/randy-lyons-KLAS-TV-142x104.jpg\" alt=\"Randy Lyons, a former security guard for the El Cortez Casino\" width=\"1200\" height=\"880\" \/><figcaption  id=\"caption-attachment-251412\"class=\"text-description\">Randy Lyons, a former security guard for the El Cortez Casino in Las Vegas, pictured above. (Image:\u00a0<em>KLAS<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The maximum the defendant, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/las-vegas-casino-guard-murdered-suspect-had-49-arrests\/\">Pedro Lizano<\/a>, 35, will serve is eight years, according to the sentence announced by Regional Justice Center Judge Jacqueline Bluth, a former prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p>Lizano pushed the guard, Randy Lyons, 67, to the hard pavement at the casino\u2019s valet area.<\/p>\n<h2>Bleeding on the Brain<\/h2>\n<p>Lyons fell backward and his head struck the pavement. He lost consciousness. His injuries included serious bleeding on the brain, <em>KLAS<\/em>, a local TV station, reported.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p>Lyons\u2019s condition remained grave as he remained hospitalized. In February, Lyons\u2019 family found little choice but to take him off of life support when he had a second occurrence of bleeding on the brain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Originally, Lizano was charged with battery. That was upped to murder after Lyons&#8217; death. The charge was lowered to involuntary manslaughter under a plea deal.<\/p>\n<p>On Sept. 26, 2021, Lyons was directed to a casino restaurant to find Lizano, who was creating a disturbance. Lizano saw Lyons and stood up before rushing at him. He forcefully shoved Lyons, leading to the fall. He took away a brother. He took away a son. He took away a grandfather and he took away my husband,\u201d<\/strong> Randy Lyons\u2019s wife, Elizabeth MacDowell, said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cPedro Lizano had no regard for my brother\u2019s life or safety,\u201d Lyons\u2019 sister, Brenda Lyons, added to the court.<\/p>\n<p>She held up a necklace that carries some of her brother\u2019s ashes. (Image: Kayak)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another sibling remembered Lyons\u2019 last days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven when he could no longer open his eyes, he forced himself to lift his head off the pillow in a desperate attempt to say goodbye to us,\u201d his brother, Mitchell Lyons, told the court.<\/p>\n<p>It was also revealed that Lizano was arrested by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVPMD) 49 times since 2008, <em>KLAS<\/em> said. He was given 10 addition,al citations in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Lizano\u2019s sister, Tania Arriaga, wrote a letter to the judge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy brother has been struggling with mental health issues for such a long time and every time that I attempt to get him help, he is released without help,\u201d the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>Lizano tried to explain his actions to the court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was homeless, and I was cold, and I needed somewhere to stay,\u201d Lizano said.<\/p>\n<p>His attorney, David Westbrook, cited his client\u2019s mental health challenges.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"main-blockquote\"><p><strong>The root cause is that he has a mental illness that he\u2019s been unable to treat and that we as a society have been unable to give him the resources to treat,\u201d<\/strong> Westbrook argued to the judge.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>MacDowell rejected those arguments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMental illness cannot be used as an excuse and as a, very appropriately, get-out-of-jail ticket. I will be the thorn in his side for the rest of his life because I will not allow him to take away another son, another brother, a sister, a mother of somebody.
