(Image: Yonhap News Agency)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">A status conference has been scheduled for next Tuesday afternoon in the US District Courthouse in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">Wednesday evening, Lisette Carnet, Puig\u2019s agent, posted a statement indicating she discovered \u201cnewfound evidence\u201d that she shared with her client\u2019s lead defense attorney, Keri Axel. In addition to changing the hearing date, Carnet said Axel also requested federal prosecutors offer more discovery based on the new evidence.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">New information sheds light on government\u2019s case that could exculpate <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YasielPuig?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@YasielPuig<\/a> Puig does not enter guilty plea today as attorneys ask for more time to review new info. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/76aECBUkeA\">pic.twitter.com\/76aECBUkeA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; MLB Player Agent Lisette Carnet (@lisettecarnet) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lisettecarnet\/status\/1595607724141969408?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 24, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"NewNormal\"><strong>\u201cThe government\u2019s charge is based on the allegations that Mr. Puig attempted to obstruct its inquiry by not being forthcoming about a person of interest and one of the government\u2019s intended targets in the case,\u201d <\/strong>Carnet said.<strong> \u201cYesterday, the government made available the interview reports pertaining to the person of interest. It revealed facts that are exculpatory to Mr. Puig and appear to corroborate facts that Puig told the government.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"NewNormal\">Agent: Puig Felt &#8216;Rushed&#8217; in Feds Interview<\/h2>\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">Federal agents said Puig lied in a January interview about placing bets with someone who was connected with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/former-baseball-player-enters-plea-for-running-illegal-sportsbook-out-of-costa-rica\/\">Wayne Nix<\/a>, a former minor league ballplayer who entered a guilty plea in April on gambling and falsified tax return charges. The authorities said in a Nov. 14 release that Puig hindered prosecutorial efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">However, Carnet issued a statement the following day questioning the charge.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"main-blockquote\">\n<p class=\"NewNormal\"><strong>He came to the interview feeling rushed, unprepared, without criminal counsel with him, and also lacked his own interpreter,\u201d <\/strong>Carnet stated on Nov. 15. <strong>\u201cGiven his history growing up in authoritarian Cuba, government interviews are triggering and only worsen his ADHD symptoms and other mental health struggles, for which he is in treatment.<\/strong> <strong>He would have benefitted from this care at the time of the interview.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">Authorities say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/yasiel-puig-ex-mlb-player-to-plead-guilty-in-federal-sports-betting-case\/\">Puig started betting<\/a> with Nix in May 2019, when he was playing for the Cincinnati Reds, and had lost nearly $283,000 by June. After paying $200,000 toward the losses, Puig made 899 more bets on basketball, football, and tennis between July 4, 2019, and Sept. 29, 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">None of the wagers involved baseball games.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"zxx\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/N7hzWkGUhu\">pic.twitter.com\/N7hzWkGUhu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; MLB Player Agent Lisette Carnet (@lisettecarnet) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lisettecarnet\/status\/1592564195421487104?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 15, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"NewNormal\">&#8216;Obligation to Review&#8217; New Evidence<\/h2>\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">The US Attorney\u2019s press release earlier this month mentioned Puig could face up to five years in federal prison. He also agreed to pay a fine of $55,000. Carnet noted Puig could also receive probation if he goes through with the guilty plea.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">On Wednesday, Carnet said that Puig has made great strides in tackling his mental health issues.\u00a0 He last played in MLB in 2019, and played in South Korea this year.
