As suspected by the giddy crowd on Wednesday night \u2013 though it was never officially confirmed \u2013 Hamilton<\/em> creator Lin-Manuel Miranda guest-starred in the opening night of Freestyle Love Supreme at the Venetian<\/em>. That’s the improvised hip-hop show he cocreated in 2004 before Hamilton <\/em>and In The Heights<\/em>\u00a0made him a household name.<\/p>\n

Directed by Thomas Kail, Freestyle Love Supreme <\/em>comedically engages audiences, who are not only encouraged — but are expected — to provide suggestions. Last night, one audience member reportedly shouted that she once started a rumor at her Catholic school that two nuns were \u201cgetting it on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miranda responded: \u201cWow, we are<\/em> in Vegas!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The show\u2019s Vegas incarnation \u2013 which runs 90 minutes \u2013 is led by MC Andrew \u201cJelly Donut\u201d Bancroft and features Simone \u201cSims\u201d Acosta, Richard \u201cRich Midway\u201d Baskin Jr., Jay C. \u201cJellis J\u201d Ellis, Kaila \u201cKaiser R\u00f6z\u00e9\u201d Mullady, Morgan \u201cHummingbird\u201d Reilly, and Dizzy Seine.<\/p>\n

\n

Improv guru Anthony Veneziale and Miranda conceived the show in 2004 during rehearsal breaks for In the Heights.<\/em>\u00a0It was performed multiple times over the years before debuting on Broadway, where it ran from October 2021 to January 2022. The Las Vegas cast recently toured the show to 11 US cities, ending in August in Pasadena.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Musically, Freestyle Love Supreme<\/em> pays homage to jazz saxophonist John Coltrane\u2019s classic 1965 album A Love Supreme,<\/em>\u00a0with dues also owed to the soul, blues, and hip-hop. A range of vocals \u2013 from harmonic singing to freestyle rapping to beatboxing \u2014 are backed by tight tunes from keyboards and human percussion.<\/p>\n

Hamiltonian Heights?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Miranda\u2019s best-known work, Hamilton<\/em>, won 11 Tony Awards in 2016, the most ever for a musical. These awards included Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Direction of a Musical, among others. Miranda also was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work. That spells some fairly high expectations for all his follow-up projects.<\/p>\n

Over the years, Venetian\/Palazzo enjoyed success with Vegas-ized Broadway hits, including Phantom \u2014 The Las Vegas Spectacular<\/em>\u00a0(2006-2012), Jersey Boys<\/em>\u00a0(2008-2012),\u00a0<\/em>and Rock of Ages<\/em>\u00a0(2012-2016). O<\/em>ther shows at the twin resorts \u2013 including Nebulae: The LifeForce<\/em> (2000), Sourire <\/em>(2002), The Real Deal <\/em>(2008), and Puppet Up! Uncensored <\/em>(2016) \u2013 out-and-out tanked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Opening night proved a resounding, sold-out success for Freestyle Love Supreme<\/em>. However, it’s a given that Miranda\u2019s addition to the cast of his own musicals will generate tremendous buzz. Whether that buzz can continue without his star power is something that remains to be seen.<\/p>\n
