At the time of the $46 million purchase, company officials said they planned to install 1,500 HHR machines in a $100 million rebuild of the track\u2019s grandstand.<\/p>\nAt Tuesday\u2019s Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) meeting in Lexington, CDI received approval to install up to 2,500 HHR machines at Turfway.<\/p>\n
In a letter to the KHRC requesting the move, Flanery said the company will draw on its experiences running Derby City Gaming \u2013 Churchill\u2019s off-track HHR parlor in Louisville \u2013 to create a \u201cfirst-class\u201d gambling and entertainment experience for customers. The additional machines also will generate revenue that will be funneled into purses for the track\u2019s holiday and winter meets.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s an aggressive move by Churchill Downs in what is already a competitive gaming market around Cincinnati. The Ohio city has a full-fledged casino downtown and two racinos in the area. There\u2019s also a Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg, Ind., that\u2019s a short distance from the Ohio and Kentucky state lines.
