Every reader here should realize that these 118 comments posted since September 6 were a key factor in the Bally’s Corporation decision of 9/13 to break off their Nittany Mall casino framework agreement with Ira Lubert. He never anticipated that the public outroar from his own college town of State College would be strong enough to convince Bally’s to abandon their plans to build a Bally’s casino just three miles down the road from the main campus of Penn State University. Ira Lubert is very disappointed with their decision and he should be. Bally’s listened to us!

The clear and obvious negative impacts to Nassau County’s environment and quality of life have been well documented and advocated for. The elected officials who are supposed to represent our interest have failed us time and time again in this process. What’s less openly discussed and understood is the weakness of the Sands business case in this location. There is virtually no other draw for visitors nor a viable infrastructure to support ease of visits. This casino, if approved, will undoubtedly fail after the potential Year 1 rush fades. There are countless examples across the nation to support this thesis yet the supporters involved seem to be not only blind to the facts but uninterested in the downside risks that will clearly fall on our communities.

One quibble I have though is its failure to mention the incredibly important role of Alan Canforth of Chancellor Broadcasting, who was instrumental in syndicating Art Bell’s radio show beginning in the early 1990s all they way from coast to coast. To state that “Bell hosted, produced, and engineered the show, while Ramona handled the business end,” and overlook the contribution of Mr. Canforth to Art’s success, is a regrettable omission. Art regarded Alan Canforth both as his “mentor” and good friend, and this should not go unmentioned. BUT AGAIN, thank you very much for writing this article. It’s important to remember the insightful contributions of Art Bell, along with his many guests and callers, to the wonderful world of the paranormal.

Usually, environmental hearings and reviews weigh negative environmental impacts of a project against the good that the project will do for the community. In this case there is NO long term good for the community. Hosting this casino will cost us tax dollars – – not bring them in. The casino will drain customers and money away from our downtowns. The casino will destroy people, families and communities. It’s happened all around the country: please visit Atlantic City if you still need convincing. The casino will drain already strained aquifer system.

I was once open to the idea that legalized, regulated gambling could have a place in a decent society. However, over the past several years, I have seen how the states’ gambling regulators have been almost entirely captured by the industry they are supposed to regulate, and the gambling operators themselves have absolutely no decency or self restraint. The gambling industry treats people as process inputs to be consumed rather than customers. Eventually, the representatives of the AGA will be viewed with the same disdain as the “white coat” doctors who used to promote the health benefits of smoking. These regulations are a good first step toward curtailing some of the more predatory practices that the gambling industry has recently devised!

My copy of the U.S. constitution doesn’t authorize the federal government to have jurisdiction over any intra state betting. The rules on my sportsbooks’ web page specifically state I must be physically located within the borders of my state. I’m sure every other state has the same restrictions. in March 2023 I went to Vegas for 5 nights. Stayed at Boulder Station for $432 total. That included resort fees and taxes, About $85 a night. Yes it was off the strip but who cares if you can get a good deal at a decent hotel/casino. And that included a Friday and Saturday night AND it was the same weekend as 2 Taylor Swift concerts and the Ncaa basketball tournament in town. My point is, the deals are there if you just look, even with the resort fees. Quit whining and start looking. MONTHS in advance if you can.

We do not want a casino in our State College and Centre County community. The casino will be costly for residents; economic analysis does not support the idea that the casino will generate enough jobs or revenue for the local economy to outweigh the economic costs (increased public safety costs, drunk driving risks, etc.) posed by the casino. Casinos also look sad and empty most of the time when you drive by the existing casinos all around the country. We don’t need that here!
