Bryson DeChambeau Now Favorite in All Three 2020 Majors, Odds 10/1 in Each

After winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Bryson DeChambeau is now the betting favorite at some sportsbooks for each of the three golf majors in 2020. The 26-year-old is at 10/1 in the PGA Championship, US Open, and Masters.

DeChambeau was dominant Sunday, posting a final-round 65 (-7) to jump leader Matthew Wolff and win by three. In the 11 PGA Tour tournaments he’s entered in the 2020 wraparound season, he’s made 10 cuts, has eight top-10 finishes, and a win. DeChambeau is also up to No. 7 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

It’s a little emotional for me because I did do something a little different. I changed my body, I changed my mindset in the game, and was able to accomplish a win while playing a completely different style of golf,” said DeChambeau.

Oddsmakers across the nation are quickly trying to reduce their liability on the buffed-up Texan by shortening his odds of winning his first major.

The Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas has him the favorite (10/1), taking the top spot from current world No. 1 Rory McIlroy — who is now at 12/1 in each of the three majors.

The Open Championship is not being contested in 2020 because of the coronavirus.

Buying in Bulk

During the suspension of the PGA Tour, DeChambeau used the time to bulk up, adding 40 pounds to his 6’1″ frame. Since the tour resumed play last month, DeChambeau has played in all four events, recording finishes of T3, T8, T6, and 1.

He’s a combined -69 under par for the four tournaments, with a scoring average of 66.43 strokes per round. And that has bettors buying DeChambeau futures.

Of course, there’s no guarantee DeChambeau’s solid play with continue. In the game of golf, the only certainty is that there will be highs and lows.

Not all oddsmakers are sold that DeChambeau is the man to beat in the majors. The FanDuel sportsbook still has McIlroy with the shortest odds. The 31-year-old Northern Irishman and four-time major winner is 7/1 for the PGA, 9/1 at the US Open, and 6/1 at the Masters.

A win at the Masters — rescheduled from April to November 12-15 — would complete the career Grand Slam for McIlroy. FanDuel has DeChambeau for the three majors at 11/1, 14/1, and 12/1.

Major Shortcomings

For all the hype surrounding DeChambeau, it’s worth noting that he’s struggled in the early part of his career in the majors.

In the 14 majors he’s played (including as an amateur), DeChambeau has made the cut eight times. However, he has only three top-25 finishes, and zero top-10 finishes. His best finish is a T15 at the 2016 US Open at Oakmont Country Club.

The US Open returns to Winged Foot for the first time since 2006. The Mamaroneck, New York, the venue is where Phil Mickelson notoriously made a double bogey on the final hole to lose to Geoff Ogilvy by one shot.

Mickelson would cap off his own career Grand Slam with a win at Winged Foot in September. The SuperBook has Lefty at 100/1 to hoist the trophy.
