Paul Wilson On: Do Casinos Cheat?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After the success of <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/the-real-hustle-highlights\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Real Hustle<\/a><\/em>, I\u2019d meet all sorts of people from both sides of casino games: Managers, dealers, and players. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many players are fascinated by how games can be\nbeaten both legally and otherwise, which is a good thing but a few would tell\nwar stories about being cheated by casinos and would ask my opinion on a\nvariety of circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In each case, I had one question that would tell me exactly how likely it was that they (or anyone) had been, or could be cheated, by a casino: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"arve\" data-mode=\"normal\" data-oembed=\"1\" data-provider=\"youtube\" id=\"arve-youtube-qvp06wkt_yo66ecc9b6b488f033024103\" style=\"max-width:900px;\">\n<span class=\"arve-inner\">\n<span class=\"arve-embed arve-embed--has-aspect-ratio\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 500 \/ class=\"wp-block-heading\">Location, Location, Location<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re traveling somewhere and are invited to (or discover) a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/local\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"local casino (opens in a new tab)\">local casino<\/a> without doing a little research on that country, its laws and reputation, then you might be walking into a trap designed to snare unwary foreigners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/6-craziest-illegal-casino-locations-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Illegal (opens in a new tab)\">Illegal<\/a> and unregulated casinos can look remarkably convincing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once inside, though, you could just as easily be\nin a garage on the outskirts of town since many victims are already \u201cin their\ncups\u201d before being offered the chance to play by a local roper (a con artist\ntasked with attracting potential marks to a crooked game or scenario). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These establishments are often card rooms or perhaps one or two table games crammed into a garage or apartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But equally, very casino-like interiors and exteriors have been known to be operating completely outside the law even though they look and feel a lot like a miniature version of Las Vegas or Macau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"bad-beat (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/bad-beats-poker\/\" target=\"_blank\">bad-beat<\/a> story starts in a country or region that isn\u2019t known for well-regulated gambling houses and features such classic story beats as \u201cI was pretty drunk,\u201d \u201che or she was really attractive,\u201d or \u201cI woke up in hospital\/in a ditch\/back in my room and had no idea how I got there,\u201d then you might have been rolled in a country where secret or hidden casinos operate outside of local laws and are as likely to be scam factories as they are gaming houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In these clip-joints, you can expect to be\ncheated either by outright manipulation of the game or crazy-bad odds that will\nclean out any bankroll in a fraction of the time of a legitimate casino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What about under the bright lights of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/gambling-destinations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"gambling meccas (opens in a new tab)\">gambling meccas<\/a> like Las Vegas, Atlantic City or Macau?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These cities depend on their image as a place to\ngamble, see great shows or live the high life inside big, gaudy, neon-lit\nhotels that attract millions of players a year to risk their money and chance\ntheir luck. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any proof of foul play might damage an entire city\u2019s reputation in one wave of bad news or social media so naturally, <strong>their games are controlled and policed from all sides<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine a big-name casino being caught <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/false-deals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">dealing seconds<\/a>, loading dice or stripping decks to fleece their customers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scandal would be enormous and the collateral\ndamage to other establishments would be unacceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bad Old Days&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t always that way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The history of Las Vegas features owners who\nturned a blind eye to managers and dealers who might shift the odds on a lucky\nplayer to avoid a major loss on their shift. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the connection between criminal enterprises\nand Las Vegas casinos was broken, house cheaters became a thing of the past but\nbefore that transition, big winners might have found their hot run of good luck\nbeing reversed by a change of dealer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bust-out dealers were career cheaters who\ncrossed to the other side of the table. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their job was to work their magic on behalf of the house whenever necessary and would often work as pit bosses, occasional honest dealers or even remain on-call should a lucky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/5-crazy-tales-las-vegas-whales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">whale<\/a> start to hurt the numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The smart bust-out artists knew how to make a\ngame turn gradually and keep a player on the line until he or she had played\nback and lost everything they\u2019d won. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second deals and slug controls were often used\nto control what cards hit and what missed but from the moment they arrived at\nthe table, odds were no longer a factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worst of all, there was always the chance of a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mickey_Finn_(drugs)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Micky Finn<\/a>\u201d being dropped into a player\u2019s drink to keep them playing, while making them easier to manipulate and less likely to make good decisions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some managers simply culled-out high cards from\nthe deck or shoe and let worse-than-fair odds do the damage for them but once\nthe corporations had taken over, the tide turned against these practices though\nit may have taken longer than some would admit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the name on the sign may have changed, the\nsame tags on the floor remained the same so it took a gradual shift in\nperspective (and culture) to stop staff from protecting their bottom line with\nbottom deals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, we are a couple of generations past those\ndays and while there are still dealers and managers who remember the bad old\ndays of cheating and stealing, they know that the eye in the sky is protecting\nthe house from all threats foreign and domestic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a player wins too much, p*sses off the pit boss or is an asshole to their dealers, no one is calling an 80-year-old, bust-out man out of retirement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The numbers will do their work if you can keep the sucker at the table and a few sh*tty cocktails will shift his game into reverse without the need for slipping them a Mickey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As time went on, the value of reputation convinced bosses that this might hurt their business in the long run and <strong>cheating customers became unnecessary once the house began to trust their mathematical advantage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bias Confirmed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A run of great cards or a fantastic roll of the\ndice has to end sometime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just because the dealer\u2019s changed, it doesn\u2019t\nmean that sudden shift in fortune is down to anything that interfered with the\nnatural outcome of the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may seem like the cards are always against you or that you always seem to hit a bad run of luck when some dealer, manager or other player arrives, but <strong>most of that is just the human brain making connections that don\u2019t really exist<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you happen to believe in luck, coincidence\nand the fickle hand of fate then perhaps these events or influences might fit\nyour worldview but that doesn\u2019t mean or prove anything illegal or sneaky was\nnecessary to bump your bankroll back into the red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, <strong>if you really did get cheated by a casino, it\u2019s all about where you chose to risk your money <\/strong>(and potentially, your good health). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same is true online, though that\u2019s a\ndiscussion for another day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of this goes to say or prove it might never happen in places like Las Vegas or Macau but if reputation is obviously important to a city, state or country, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/gambling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"gambling (opens in a new tab)\">gambling<\/a> is closely guarded by the law as well as the owners of a casino, chances are excellent the only
